If you want truly relaxing holiday and enjoy fabulous beaches and stunning countryside, then this is the region for you

This area of Andalucia in southern Spain is totally unspoilt by the onset of tourism. There are charming white washed villages and fabulous beaches. The Huelva la Luz area is unlike other tourist regions and the developments are less saturated than those usually associated with Spain. It has been developed on a more environmentally friendly scale than many of the other Costas. The culture and the character of the Spanish is evident from flamenco bars to wonderful candle lit restaurants - life can be as energetic or laid back as you want it to be.
Faro - More than just the airport! It is the capital of the Algarve – visit the old town and the ‘church of bones’.
Forum Algarve – a modern shopping mall, with a cinema which shows most films in English with Portuguese sub-titles. Fast food restaurants. A useful place to know about for the odd rainy day!
Also worth checking out is Tavira, originating from Roman times now better known for its excellent fish restaurants and many churches.
Enjoy lunch in Alcoutim, visit the historic castle or spend time at the river beach. Don’t leave without buying the locally produced cake from the market stall which is near the boat moorings on the river Guadiana.
Beaches along the Costa de la Luz are generally long, sandy and backed by dunes and pine woods. and are some of the best in Spain. The sand dunes are teeming with wild flowers and bordered by shady pine and eucalyptus trees, they stretch for miles without a single high rise block to blight the horizon. The weather along this coastal region can be very hot in summer with gentle sea breezes to help keep the temperature more comfortable and even in the winter the weather is usually mild. Costa de la Luz boasts an average of 320 days of sunshine a year and the temperature rarely drops below 17° C.
For the more energetic there are a variety of water sports to be found locally. There are water parks and go-kart tracks, horse riding, cycling and tennis. You could take a scenic river tour along the Guadiana River or a boat trip along the coast. From Ayamonte you can hop on the local ferry (even with your car) and take the 10 minute ride across the river to Portugal. Donąt forget to turn your watch back an hour though!
There couldn't be an easier place to cycle! The flat terraine of the areas near the beach are perfect for those who are maybe not as fit as they would like to be. In Isla Canela the promenade from the marina to the estuary is wonderful for an easy bike ride.
Take your bike on the ferry across to Villa Real de Sao Antonio and enjoy the scenery through the cycle tracks in the pine forest. Follow the "cameleon trail" you might get lucky!
Bicycle hire is from around 15€
This area of Spain is becoming renowned for the quality of its golf courses. There are numerous golf courses all within a short drive not to mention the ones across the border in Portugal. There are many courses to choose from including championship ones and those that are less challenging. Purple Parrot Group can arrange rounds of golf in both Spain and Portugal. It is possible to play in one country in the morning and in the other the same afternoon!
For those with an eye to the past Huelva is the city that Christopher Columbus set sail from in 1492 on his history making adventure to the New World. There are many references to him in and around the city with many roads and buildings bearing his name – Colon in Spanish.
Other culture vultures will not be able to resist a visit to Seville and the magnificent Giralda tower in particular for breath taking views across the city. Take a ride in a horse and carriage and see all the fascinating sights this beautiful and historic city has to offer from the Cathedral to the narrow winding streets in the heart of the old city.
